Screen time is not a monolithic concept; it is heavily stratified by age, generation, and socio-economic status.
Generational Divide: Gen Z (16-24 years old) and Millennials are the heaviest users, with daily averages often surpassing 7 to 9 hours. For these groups, screen use is deeply integrated into their work, social, and leisure activities. In stark contrast, Baby Boomers (60+ years old) and the Silent Generation have the lowest screen time, typically under 4 hours per day, reflecting less pervasive digital adoption in their formative years.
Adolescent Behavior: A critical area of concern lies with children and teenagers. Studies show that over half of U.S. teenagers (ages 12-17) spend 4 or more hours daily on screens. For teens from lower-income households, this number can be significantly higher, reaching over 9 hours per day, a trend that aligns with research on digital divides and social inequality.
